Damien studied medicine at St Andrews University and Manchester Medical School qualifying in 1984. He worked as a House Officer for a year at Salford Royal and Hope Hospitals and then spent a further two years on a medical rotation at Blackburn Royal Infirmary and Queens Park Hospital. It was during this time he fell in love with East Lancashire and always vowed to return.

After twelve months experience as a trainee in General Practice in Bury he moved back into hospital medicine specialising in gastroenterology at South Manchester University Hospital. From there he was appointed to a registrar post in the internationally renowned Gastroenterology Unit, The General Infirmary at Leeds, under the tutelage of Professor Anthony Axon, where he subsequently became a research registrar.

In 1993 he was appointed Senior Registrar and worked with Dr Adrian Manning (international expert in irritable bowel syndrome) at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The following year Damien was delighted to return to East Lancashire as a Consultant Physician with an interest in Gastroenterology.

He is an Honorary Professor in the School of Medicine, University of Central Lancashire and was Director of Medical Undergraduate Education at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust (ELHT). In 2019 Damien was awarded the William Cullen Prize by The Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh for excellence in teaching and service innovation in recognition of his work in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and medical handover. In 2023, the School of Medicine, UCLan created the Lynch Award for the graduating medical student with the best overall clinical examination [OSCE] performance in recognition of his “longstanding and very valued commitment to the MBBS programme”. He has also been Divisional Director for Medicine at ELHT and Programme Director for Gastroenterology Training in the Northwest.
